The Puerto Rico Department of Health declared the 2025-2026 Influenza Season as epidemic, this means that there has been an increase in cases throughout the island. Some important details are:
- By mid-January there were more than 42,000 reported cases of influenza
- Of these cases, 3,001 had been hospitalized
- 128 deaths have been associated with influenza
- About half of these cases are pediatric
- Most of the people who died (96%) were not vaccinated
Influenza is easily transmitted and can cause serious complications, especially in children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions. Caring for our people is up to all of us:
- Vaccinate against influenza every season
- Cover yourself by coughing or sneezing with a disposable handkerchief and fleece
- Disinfect surfaces around you
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
- Stay at home if you have symptoms, if you can’t avoid going somewhere use mask
- Wash your hands frequently (with soap and water for 15-20 seconds)
If you have a fever, cough, body pain, congestion or extreme tiredness:
- Seek medical attention early
- Follow your health professional’s instructions
- Avoid contact with people who have a higher risk of health complications
Good nutrition helps your body be better prepared for respiratory infections or viruses, don’t forget to include:
- Fruits and vegetables every day
- Proteins such as: chicken, fish, eggs, beans
- Healthy fats like: nuts, seeds, avocado
- Low-fat or no-fat yogurt
- Sufficient water during the day
Sleeping well, managing stress and staying active also strengthen the immune system. Treating influenza in time can prevent hospitalization and complications. Influenza affects all regions of Puerto Rico. Getting vaccinated, taking care of yourself and caring for others saves lives.
